Beaches, particularly surf beaches, are special places. In a sense they are the edge of our comfort zone, the transition between safe land and the unknown ocean. Despite the notion many of us have of being at ease in the ocean, it is a fantasy. In reality we play on the shallow fringes for brief periods, then scamper ashore to safety. We are mere wanna-be dolphins, and we look longingly at their fluid lives in the sea from our dry and dusty dwellings.
